Guide To Using A Metal Band Saw

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Metal band saws are used by farmers, metal workers and handy man types to easily cut metal into specific size pieces. The metal pieces may be used to build sheds, or buildings or barns as well as other things. Metal band saws have strong blades for cutting through steel and other heavy metal material. There are different blades used for different types of metal. Friction and hot saw blades are used mainly to cut steel tubes, decking material and angel cuts. Solid high speed steel saw blades are used for cutting extrusions, thin wall tubing, angel iron, flat bar, and ferrous applications. Carbide tipped saw blades cut extrusions, solids, aluminum, brass, copper and bronze. Circular knives are used for cutting rubber tubing, fiber glass and aluminum. Segmented cold saw blades are used for cutting structural tube, fabrication for billets, aluminum, brass or copper.

Band saws come in two different styles. The horizontal band saw and the vertical band saw. The vertical band saw is larger than the horizontal band saw. It is a stand alone saw. It has four legs with rubber on the feet. This is to keep it from moving around during the cutting process. It is best for making straight cuts through the metal material as it is pushed through the saw blade. When pushing the material through the saw, be sure to keep your hands at least 4 or 5 inches away from the blade. Use a metal stick to push the material closer to the blade.

Another type of band saw is the horizontal style. It is hand held, and is usually smaller in size than the vertical band saw. To cut with the horizontal band saw you need to have the material you will be cutting securely tied down to a cutting table. Many horizontal band saws have a hydraulic power source. They can cut straight lines or curves or material on rolls. The saw blade is pushed through the material being cut. Most of them will shut off automatically when the cut is completed.

There are two large wheels that hold the blade on a band saw. The drive wheel provides the connection to the power source for the saw. The idler wheel can be tightened or loosen depending on how much tension you need on the blade. A blade guide helps to hold the blade in place. Power on the horizontal band saw can be from electricity or from a combustion engine. The wheels can be larger or smaller depending on what the saw is used for.

Always remove the blade from the saw when you have finished cutting. The reason it is important to do this is that there is tension on the blade when it is on the saw. The cutting process will make the blade very hot. The heat has caused it to expand a little bit. The cooling process will cause it to shrink. If there is tension on the blade during cooling, it can crack or even break the blade. Be sure to wear gloves when removing it.

Always consider safety factors when you are using a metal saw blade. Any time metal spins through metal you are going to have sparks. There may be some spark guards on the vertical and horizontal saws, but they will not protect you from all of them. Wear a protective face guard or protective goggles for obvious reasons. Make sure you do not wear loose shirt leaves or a shirt with a loose shirt tail. A band saw can pull you into the blade rapidly if it catches a piece of your clothing. Be sure you have adequate Ventilation also. Even if it is cold outside be sure at least a window is open for fresh air.

Many people who have metal band saws play around and show off with them. There are reports of people cutting their nails with them. There have been stories of people cutting their hair with them even. Be prepared to see blood fly if you get into this type of showmanship. These machines are powerful and are not toys at all. Use them properly.

Using metal band saws for work or for your home projects will be a lot easier. Just follow proper operating and safety procedures while using them and they can be very helpful tools.

Guide To Using A Metal Band Saw

Monday, January 4th, 2010

Metal band saws are used for a lot different purposes, the most common obviously is for cutting various types of metal. People use them for cutting other types of material but they should be used only on metal. If you use a metal band saw to cut other material aside from metal you could possibly damage the blades. The teeth on a blade for cutting metal are small and close together. This allows for more precise cutting. Bladed used to cut wood on the other hand have big teeth that are much further apart. Carbide tipped saw blades are used to cut extrusions, solids, aluminum, brass, copper and bronze. Friction and hot saw blades are used for cutting steel tubes, decking material and angel cuts. Solid high speed steel blades are used for cutting stronger metals.

Depending on how you will use your metal band saw, you can either cut with a vertical band saw or a horizontal band saw. For cutting straight lines you should problably use the vertical band saw. This is a stand alone saw that is a larger piece of equipment than a horizontal saw. It has four legs typically with rubber feet to keep it from moving while you are cutting material. Do not get your hands close to the blade. Use a long metal device, at least 6 to 12 inches long to help you feed the material through when it gets close to the blade.

The other type of band saw is the horizontal band saw. The horizontal band saw is a hand held saw with a rubber handle. It has a button to turn on the power and a cord to start the blade rotating. Horizontal band saws are usually hydraulically powered. The material being cut with the saw must be securely fastened to a cutting table so a smooth cut can be achieved. The saw blade is pushed through the metal to make the cut. Most horizontal saws turn off automatically when they finish the cut. They are used for straight cuts, cutting rolls and curves.

Band saws have two larger wheels that the blade runs on. Some have larger wheels and some saws have smaller wheels. One of the wheels is a drive wheel and the other one is the idler wheel. The drive wheel is fixed and is attached to the power source. Power can be electric power or hydraulic power. The driven wheel allows for the maximum transfer of power between the saw and the motor or engine. The idler wheel can be loosened or tightened which makes the blade looser or tighter. The blades need to be securely held in place while cutting so they don’t come off the wheels. A blade guide is used for this purpose.

It is recommended that you remove the blade from the saw every time you finish cutting. The blade gets very hot during the cutting process and it expands a little bit. If you leave it on the saw after you are finished it will cool down with tension being applied to it. This may cause it to break or crack, so always remove the blade for cooling. Be sure to wear protective gloves because the blade will be hot.

Follow safety precautions anytime you use a metal band saw. You are going to have a large amount of sparks flying during the cutting process. Be sure that you are not cutting near flammable liquids that may explode or near other material that may catch on fire from the sparks. Wear protective eye goggles always. Wear tight fitting clothes that will not get caught in the blade of the saw. Be sure that you have adequate ventilation. Even if it is cold outside, you need to have at least a window open.

Power tools are not toys. There have been a lot of stories of people using band saws to show off in from of their friends and ending up with serious injuries. You can easily have a hand or fingers cut off. Use the tools are they were intended only.

To summarize, metal band saws used in the proper way can be very helpful. Simply follow proper instructions for using them and proper safety measures and your projects and work will be a lot simplier.

However there are some drawbacks involved in using airsoft guns. Due to the shorter barrel of these airsoft weapons the accuracy of a good rifle is not usually obtained. Most of the conventional pistols perform well within the range of 20 to 25 meters. However, in such case oaf you need to shoot at as target further than the range supported you may have to go for a gun with a longer barrel. The projectile shot through such shorter barrel does not get enough time to stabilize itself to the targets which affects the accuracy of the shot when the target is at far distance. However, with airsoft pistols the ammunition are smaller this may serve as a disadvantage for the player if the opponent is equipped with advanced airsoft guns.

Though there are pros as well as cons involved in using airsoft guns, these are the ideal choice if you are planning to engage yourself in a game of airsoft. It is also essential to remember that there are safety gears which should be used while you are on the field. Guide To Using A Metal Band Saw

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Metal band saws can make life a lot easier for those people who work in metal shops, on farms, or just around their own home. They help to cut metal in specific sizes and shapes to help in the building of sheds, storage buildings, barns, pens, etc… If a person had to cut metal with a regular hand saw, they might get a lot of exercise but the metal would probably be a bit zagged and rough on the edges. Metal band saws should be used only for cutting metal, so that the blades can be preserved. If they are used for cutting other material you may wear them out quicker. Metal band saw blades are made from carbide, solid high speed steel and several other materials. You should be sure to use the proper blade for the material you are cutting.

Horizontal band saws are hand held devices. They usually have a rubber handle to make them easy to hold. They are good for cutting straight lines, curves and other cuts. The material being cut must be tied to a cutting table so that it doesn’t move during the cutting process. The saw blade is simply pushed through the material. The saw usually shuts off automatically when it is finished. Horizontal band saws are usually hydraulically powered.

The wheels that hold the blade on the saw are the drive wheel, which is attached to the power source and the idler wheel which is loosened or tightened depending on how tight the blade needs to be. The saw can be powered hydraulically or it can be powered with an electric motor. A blade guide is used to keep the blade securely in place and to guard the blade. The wheel sizes can be larger or smaller depending on what is being cut.

When you are finished cutting the material, it is recommended that you remove the blade from the saw whether on a vertical or a horizontal band saw. The blade, even though you use coolant will be very hot. It expands just a little bit when it is hot. If you leave it on the saw while it cools, it may crack because it shrinks back to the original size. There is tension on the blade while it’s on the saw and this can damage it during cooling. Remember to wear appropriate gloves while do so.

Many people who have metal band saws play around and show off with them. There are reports of people cutting their nails with them. There have been stories of people cutting their hair with them even. Be prepared to see blood fly if you get into this type of showmanship. These machines are powerful and are not toys at all. Use them properly.

To summarize, metal band saws used in the proper way can be very helpful. Simply follow proper instructions for using them and proper safety measures and your projects and work will be a lot simplier.

Renovate Your Yard

Sunday, June 7th, 2009
by Kimble Peterson

Have you ever watched those shows about renovating yards and thought that you wish you could do that? Thats where I was last year with the poor me syndrome. Then one day I woke up and decided to put my budget together and see what I could do. I am so glad I did because I have come a long way since that first day!

I sat down and determined what I was skilled to do and also what the friends in my circle were skilled to do as well and found that between all of us, we had a lot of experience! I didnt necessarily think they would help me, though I was sure they would, I just wanted to know where I could get some good advice from people that I trust.

My wife and I hen made a list of everything we would like to have or see in the yard. It included things like a greenhouse and storage shed but also had some things like raised beds, flowerbeds and a garden area for growing food and a nice sitting area where we could relax.

Now this was a lot of stuff and at first it seemed overwhelming. I talked to a couple of my friends and one of them suggested I start with making some changes on what we had. So I sketched out a plan to enlarge the deck and move the fence line as far back as possible with a drive through gate in the back so we could bring a truck in if we need to.

Dealing with the fence and deck was a job but it was well worth it. I did some research and found out that once you have these items you have to take care of them by sealing them for your weather conditions, which we did. My wife found some great wooden post caps to finish off the look and protect the posts as well and it still looks fantastic!

As things have progressed since then we have made great progress. We purchase what we want in kit form and move on from there. Doing it this way has worked out great. We arent finished and just chip away at it as we can. Even though its not complete its far better than it was this time last year.

Kits have been awesome to work with and I highly recommend using them. They are much easier to put together than I had thought. Of course, it will take you longer the bigger the item is and you may have to have permits for the sheds and greenhouses. If our time line is correct, we will be finished this summer. Im not sure what I will do next now that I have the renovation bug, though my wife has a lot of ideas just waiting for me!

Simple Renovations for your Yard

Thursday, June 4th, 2009
by Bobby Williams

If your like me, I get to watching all those home shows and just get depressed about what I cant afford to do or not skilled enough to do. But last year I decided to start figuring out what I can do with my budget and my skill set, and concentrate on that. It has been one of the best moves I have ever made.

Our culture is all about what you cant do or dont have. I decided to put together a list of what I could do, along with a list of what my friends could do as well. Between all of us there was a plethora of experience, knowledge and talent. I knew my friend may not have time to help me but they would be glad to lend me their knowledge and experience and a few tools, if needed.

I was always taught you have to start with the end in mind so the wife and I sat down on an afternoon and went over everything we could possible want. We had things from trellises to raised beds to a shed and a greenhouse. We also included an expansion on the deck.

When you look at a project like this it is easy to get discouraged by the shear amount of work. I called in a friend who is in the construction business and he suggested we do the hard stuff first; deal with the fence and deck. So I expanded the fence to the borders of our property and made the deck larger as well.

Dealing with the fence and deck was a job but it was well worth it. I did some research and found out that once you have these items you have to take care of them by sealing them for your weather conditions, which we did. My wife found some great wooden post caps to finish off the look and protect the posts as well and it still looks fantastic!

What we realized as we went forward is most of the items we were looking to add to what we had just done could be bought in kit form. This has made it easy to plan and get things done one by one. Now I would be lying to you if I told you we were through but we have a lot of it done and are well on our way to having the yard we always wanted to have.

What I love about the kits is they come ready to assemble and install. Of course the shed took longer to put together than the raised beds but it was still quicker than I had thought it would be. Weve been able to do the renovations that we choose to do at the rate we can afford. We think we will be completely done by the end of summer this year. Im almost sad because I have had a blast and Ill have to find something else to do. My wife is thinking kids are next; Im thinking a new kitchen!
